JerryPhotoWe have heard of the D-Day landings on the beaches of Normandy in Northern France in 1944 when English, Canadian, Free-French, and American troops “invaded” Hitler’s Fortress Europe. Perhaps you have a relative participating in that “Longest Day”; I did. My Uncle Bob was among those brave men going ashore. Fortunately he survived the experience and returned after the war to resume his life. But how did this happen?

Good planning! And who did that planning? FDR and Winston Churchill established a committee at their Canadian Conference; this group was called **Supreme Headquarters Applied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF)**. It was under the command of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower. Today’s posting takes a closer look at this unit and the men who staffed it.

“You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.”
—Eisenhower, Letter to Allied Forces

So, let’s get started on this exploration of SHAEF and its coordination of the D-Day assault on the Normandy beaches…  GLB
