Commentary:
Dolores Huerta is a remarkable Hispanic woman. She grew up in a strong Catholic family in Mexico where women were the nurturers for within the community; she continued in that role when her family moved to the San Joaquin valley. Not only did she have eleven children, fourteen grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, but she provided the oversight and guidance for an unknown group of farm workers.
She worked with César Chávez to form the United Farm Workers Union to gain fair wages, workplace protection, and other protections for union members. She was also recognized for her efforts to secure the rights of Hispanic women. That is quite a workload for an 81-year-old lady and mother. GLB
