Commentary:
In 1993, Carol Moseley Braun joined four other women to become a U.S. Senator. She was the first African American Women to become a Senator. African American Men had been Senators, especially during the Reconstruction period following the Civil War. She was one of the two African American Senators during the 20th Century; President Obama served in the Senate during the early years of this century. She became a voice for both Blacks and Women in the Senate. She continued her Liberal Social Activist role during her one term.
We need continued voices like Braun’s in our Congress to stand up for the rights of all Americans, especially the minorities and women. While these groups technically have the rights granted to them by laws, there is often a gap between what is and what ought to be. Let’s hope that this minority groups continue to use the ballot box to continue their quest for equality instead of using more militant methods.
For those of us who lived through the unrest of the 1960s, it has been a relief to see the legislation of Johnson’s Great Society eventually gaining the goals of equality within our society. It seems that more of the violence that we see today within our society is related to domestic (between spouses, especially over child custody) and by police overreacting during their attempts to deal with crime. Here in the LA area, we hear of police abuse or shooting (often resulting in death of the suspect) almost on a daily basis. We need a way to deal with the abuse of power in a more effective way.
But, let’s get right into our exploration of the legal and political career of Carol Moseley Braun and hope that we will see increased participation of minorities and women in our political process… GLB
